July 12, 2008, Saturday BVM Read: Is. 6: 1-8 Mt. 10: 24-33 "Are not two sparrows sold for next to nothing? Yet not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. As for you, every hair of your head has been counted." (Mt. 10:24-33) Jesus asked that His disciples put their hope and confidence in their heavenly Father before any adversity, aggression, evil... any situation. "Do not let them intimidate you.... Do not fear those who deprive the body of life but cannot destroy the soul." He warns us that the only ones we really need fear are the ones who tempt us into sin and move us from our love relationship with the God our Father, and make us thus lose our rights as His children. "Fear him who can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna." (28) Given human nature, we vacillate between fear, doubt, overconfidence and false security. We fall into false security when we assume that what we do, think, want, is Okay for us, even if it is not in accord with Jesus’ divine Will. We justify our lifestyles, attitudes, actions... saying all the while ‘Jesus will let me go to Heaven ‘cause he loves me so,’ -- it’s great in a catechism class for a fifth grader to understand Jesus’ divine love... but for a willful adult? There are no excuses to putting asunder God’s holy Will and His divine plan for creation: Natural Law, the Commandments as understood through the Beatitudes. (Mt. 5-8) The measure that we ‘put ourselves out’ in fulfilling the Lord’s Will, is the measure that we can have confidence and trust that we will be participants in the joy of life eternal. Reflection and commentary Psalm 139:"Where can I hide from your spirit? From your presence, where can I flee?" |
