July 13, 2008, XV Sunday in Ordinary Time Read: Is. 55:10-11 Rom. 8:18-23 Mt. 13:1-23 "To the man who has, more will be given until he grows rich; the man who has not, will lose what little he has." (Mt. 13:12) Our own lives mirror this parable... it is parable that we do not always know how to unravel correctly. For some, life means one thing, and for others, another. Those who attempt to give to their life the sense that God meant for it are given the Light of God to the heart and mind — and He will give them even more: "The man who has, more will be given..." There are those who don’t want to give their life that sense of dignity that God has assigned to it. Instead, they give in to the darkness of their heart and try to figure things out without God's help: "Listen as you will, you shall not understand, look intently as you will, you shall not see... the man who has not, will lose what little he has." (14) Every heart responds differently to the Lord, even though we all enjoy a powerful and lavish love poured over us by the Holy Spirit. We must allow these seeds of God's love to germinate in our lives. Today's parable makes it clear that we must be properly disposed. Hard ground will not accept a seed. Rocky ground lacks depth, and the seed, even though it may germinate, cannot endure. Thorny ground will eventually choke the life out of the plant. Only in rich soil will the seed germinate, grow and spread. What kind of soil do you offer for the seeds of God's love? Reflection and commentary Psalm 71: 19 "Your power and justice, God, to the highest heaven. You have done great things; O God, who is your equal?" |
