July 2008 Readings

July 19, 2008, Saturday BVM

Read: Mi. 2:1-5 Mt. 12: 14-21

Opening Prayer

"When the Pharisees were outside they began to plot against him to find a way to destroy him. Jesus was aware of this, and so he withdrew from that place. Many people followed him and he cured them all, though he sternly ordered them not to make public what he had done." (Mt. 12:14-16)

Jesus once said, "Nobody sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak..." (Mt. 9:16) He said this when the Pharisees began criticizing His disciples for not fasting, as the Pharisees themselves did, or even as the disciples of John the Baptist did, according to the traditions of Israel.

Jesus used the opportunity to teach them that the Way in which He was instructing them to relate to God and neighbor did not include putting "new ways" on the ancient traditions of the people. He would point out a distinct Way.

"Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem." (Jn. 4:21)

But the Jews were not about to change what had been an integral part of their national identity -- The Law of Moses and the traditions of their fathers. Even though Jesus showed evidence of His divine power through miracles, the Jewish leadership preferred to make plans to kill him.

Most of us do not seek God's will in humility and sincerity. We prefer to use our limited understanding of the world instead, often claiming to ourselves and others that our viewpoint is the same as Almighty God’s.

Reflection and commentary

Psalm 5: "Guide me in your justice because of my foes; make straight your way before me."
