Read: Jer. 2: 1-3, 7-8, 12-13 Mt. 13: 10-17

Opening Prayer

"When the disciples got near him, they asked him, ‘Why do you speak to them in parables?’" (Mt. 13:10)

Jesus proceeded to answer them in words that might as well have been parables: "To you has been given a knowledge of the mysteries of the reign of God, but it has not been given to the others. To the man who has, more will be given until he grows rich; the man who has not, will lose what little he has." (11-12)

We all want clarity. We want this so that we would not have to suffer doubts once we make a decision. We look but do not see... we listen but do not understand.

"‘Sluggish indeed is this people’s heart. They have scarcely heard with their ears and firmly closed their eyes....’ But blest are your eyes because they see and blest are your ears because they hear." (15-16)

To Jesus’ disciples who loved and followed Him, and were open to receive His instructions, the Lord spoke to them clearly, simply and plainly.

We contrast that with Jesus' enemies -- He spoke very differently and with great care.

Jesus hid no secrets from His disciples. "I no longer speak to you as slaves, for a slave does not know what his master is about. Instead, I call you friends, since I have made known to you all that I heard from my Father." (Jn. 15:15)

Only when we present to Jesus an open mind and heart... and a willingness to submit to His will, shall there come to us the help and guidance we so desperately seek.

Reflection and commentary

Psalm 65: "Happy is the man you choose, and bring to dwell in your courts."
