July 27, 2008, XVII SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Read: 1 Kgs. 3:5,7-12 Rom. 8:28-30 Mt. 13:44-52 "The reign of God is like a buried treasure which a man found in a field. He hid it again, and rejoicing at his find went and sold all he had and bought that field." (Mt. 13:44) Jesus makes a comparison with the discovery of a treasure and the discovery of His Kingdom. The true treasure is the intimate relationship that God has with His human children, a relationship founded in divine eternal love. St. Paul was very much against Jesus at one time, yet when he discovered Jesus he said: "Those things I used to consider gain I have now reappraised as loss in the light of Christ. I have come to rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ. For his sake I have forfeited everything; I have accounted all else rubbish so that Christ may be my wealth and I may be in him." (Phil. 3:7-9) Jesus told those who wanted to follow Him: "Go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. Afterward, come back and follow me." (Mt. 19:21) This invitation to renounce the world and to clear our hearts of all human interests in order to fill ourselves with His love doesn’t work if we try to do it "halfway." This was the mistake of Judas and many others like him. If the Kingdom does not fire up our hearts with enthusiasm and happiness, which will maintain us in faithfulness to the Lord, then we have not found the Kingdom of God. Reflection and commentary Psalm 86:8 "None among the gods can equal you, O Lord; nor can their deeds compare to yours." |
