July 31, 2008, Tuesday St. Ignatius of Loyola Read: Jer 18:1-6 Mt 13:47-53 "Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth." (Mt. 13: 49-50) Hell, as explained by Jesus, the Son of the Almighty Father, is understood as one of two possible alternatives for us humans for Eternal Life. I don’t consider a charitable warning, taking into account anothers’ love for me, to be a threat, or the use of fear or intimidation. Reason presupposes the gift and use of rational mental powers. As part of the use of reason, the abilities to formulate and adjust one’s life to perform tasks and make moral choices makes us able to do right, wrong and be successful. A dumb animal cannot be attributed with success or failure in anywhere near the same sense that we are. A good parent warns their child of the possible dangers, frustrations and problems that they might encounter in their future... up to describing in a raw way some of the things that might happen if their advice is ignored. I don’t call those scare tactics.... I call it love. To this end, Jesus, the true and uniquely qualified Teacher of Eternal Life, wants to guide us to the fullness of life, helping us to avoid the fundamental frustration that preoccupies us: "What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?" (Mt. 16:26) Reflection and commentary Psalm 106: "Remember me, O LORD, as you favor your people; that I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones." |
