July 2008 Readings

July 6, 2008, XIV Sunday in Ordinary Time

Read: Zec. 9:9-10 Rom. 8:9,11-13 Mt. 11:25-30

Opening Prayer

"Father, Lord of heaven and earth, to you I offer praise; for what you have hidden from the learned and clever you have revealed to the merest children. Father, it is true. You have graciously willed it so." (Mt. 11:25-26)

Wisdom and intelligence, on their own, do not keep us from the love of God. "God gave Solomon wisdom and exceptional understanding and knowledge, as vast as the sand on the seashore." (1 Kgs 5:9)

Arrogance and pride causes us to separate ourselves from God. It is much the same as material wealth -- in itself, it is not evil. However, if we believe ourselves self-sufficient, independent, and confuse success with aggrandizement and lack gratitude and generosity, we are on the same road as Satan -- we make gods of ourselves.

Wisdom is spiritual wealth. True wisdom cannot separate us from the love of God. True wisdom is that knowledge which helps us understand our relationship with God, His love for us and the proper response to that divine love. True wisdom comes only from God, and cannot be gained through human effort or merit: "No one knows the Son but the Father, and no one knows the Father but the Son -- and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him." (27)

Jesus invites us to enjoy this wisdom: "Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you." (28)

Humility and openness to the Lord are what makes people ready to accept the many gifts that God offers us.

Reflection and commentary

Psalm 19:8 "The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple."
